Since Apple announced its partnership with OpenAI to integrate the ChatGPT AI chatbot software into its platforms, Elon Musk has shown visible anger and expressed a desire to challenge Apple.

Earlier this week, a user on X (formerly Twitter) posted a prediction that Elon Musk would collaborate with Samsung to create a phone called the X Phone, aimed at competing with Apple’s iPhone.

“I am stating this now. X will partner with Samsung to produce the X Phone,” the user predicted.

Elon Musk quickly responded with a message: “This is not impossible.”

Elon Musk’s Fury Towards Apple
The day before, Elon Musk had threatened to ban all employees at his companies, such as Tesla and SpaceX, from using Apple devices like iPhones, MacBooks, and iPads, due to Apple’s integration of the AI chatbot ChatGPT on its platforms. According to Musk, this represents a severe violation of security.

“This is an unacceptable security breach. Apple has no idea what’s happening. Apple devices will be banned if they integrate ChatGPT at the operating system level,” Musk wrote on his personal X account.

Musk even declared that visitors to his companies would be “banned” if they used Apple devices.

Musk’s announcement came after Apple revealed its partnership with OpenAI, allowing the integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s platforms and devices, including iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. This enables users to ask questions, receive responses from ChatGPT, or request ChatGPT to create content, draw pictures, and more.

Musk and OpenAI – From Founder to “Sworn Enemies”
OpenAI, the “father” of ChatGPT, was founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, and others. The company’s original goal was to develop AI systems that were friendly and beneficial, ensuring AI would not surpass human control.

Initially, Musk and Altman held leadership positions within the company. However, in 2018, Musk resigned from the board but continued to fund OpenAI’s research activities.

In 2019, Microsoft provided a $1 billion investment to OpenAI, and by 2023, this investment grew to $10 billion. This marked the point when Musk’s relationship with Altman and OpenAI began to sour.

The root of the tension was that OpenAI was originally established as a non-profit organization, allowing it to develop AI systems without the influence or control of money. But once OpenAI accepted Microsoft’s investment, it shifted to a “limited-profit” model, allowing it to raise more funds for large-scale AI projects. This change infuriated Musk, who repeatedly criticized Altman for prioritizing profit over neutrality in AI development.

Musk openly expressed his dissatisfaction, publicly criticizing Sam Altman and OpenAI on social media, accusing Altman of leading OpenAI away from its founding principles.

Elon Musk even founded his own AI company, xAI, to compete with OpenAI. Therefore, it’s not far-fetched to consider that Musk might also establish a smartphone company to compete with Apple.
